When enjoying any type of recreational activity, we ought to live by the golden rule of: “safety first.” Whether we are riding a skateboard or taking a stroll during nighttime, safety should always be our first priority. Of course, accidents happen. However, we can help to minimize or even prevent mistakes from occurring, by taking some basic precautions. When going on motorcycle road trips, for instance, here are some safety tips to make your trip as enjoyable and secure as possible:
1. Inspect your motorcycle before the road trip
When riding in rural areas, your cell phone is often unable to receive any signals. Thus, it is important to ensure that your motorcycle is in good working order BEFORE your road trip. Have an expert conduct various routine checks on your motorcycle, prior to hitting the road.
2. Watch for animals
Riding in rural areas can be thrilling. There is the fresh air, the lovely landscapes, and the freedom of zipping along open roads. However, remember that many animals also call these regions their home. Thus, be wary of any scurrying possums or leaping deer, as you speed down the road. These animals have been here eons before us, so we ought to live in harmony with them.
3. Wear safety gear
Only 17 states have statewide laws requiring young motorcycle riders to wear helmets. However, keep in mind that motorcycle helmets can reduce the likelihood of crash fatalities, by over one-third! While you have the choice whether to wear helmets, it is highly recommended that you do as such. Furthermore, it is wise to wear helmets that meet rigorous safety standards (that means no toy army helmets). It is also advisable for you to wear protective gloves, body wear, and boots. The bottom line is that motorcycles make you more vulnerable to accidents. Protect yourself!
4. Keep your eyes peeled for road signs
Sure, you can enjoy the gorgeous landscapes that surround you during you motorcycle road trip. However, you should also be aware of any road signs, and particularly those indicating speed limit changes, or various hazards (i.e. falling rocks, crossing moose, curvy roads, etc.).
5. Wear elements for the elements
Weather can differ significantly during any motorcycle road trip. Thus, it is vital that you aptly prepare yourself for it. You could experience any of the following types of weather, during your motorcycle road trip:
• extreme temperatures
• freezing rain
• rain
• sleet
• snow
• wind
